Product
.53 caliber, breechloading needle fire Schroeder Carbine, made by Herman Schroeder, William Schmidt, Louis Salewski in 1857. This is the only needle fire weapon concidered by the United States. It was single shot. To operate the action you have to rotaring a large side lever down and to the rear which moves barrel forward for loading. Overall length of the gun is 42 1/2" and the barrel is 26 2/3" in length. The gun weights approcimately 7 lbs.

The army tested the gun already in July 1856 and ordered 10 more in 1857. Further trials were made in March 1860 by the Ordnance Board but at that time it was recognized that the gun is unfit for military service.
